How To Use The 5 Love Languages To Make Your Fans Feel Special

Do you know the 5 Love Languages? In 1992, radio host Gary Chapman wrote a book titled The Five Love Languages: How to Express Heartfelt Commitment to Your Mate, and quickly became a household expression.

The basic idea is that each one of us feels the most understood and appreciated in one of five ways - receiving gifts, words of affirmation, quality time, acts of service, and physical touch.

As musicians, making fans feel understood and appreciated is our job - our art expresses people’s emotions in beautiful ways they can’t. It’s our talent. So then, why not find various ways to show your fans you appreciate them back, spanning across the love languages to reach all sorts of personalities?

If Your Fan’s Love Language Is Receiving Gifts…

  • Wrap their online merch orders with extra care (confetti, handwritten notes…)

  • Add little extras inside purchases (stickers, guitar picks…)

  • Randomly surprise super-fans with gifts that relate to their other interests beyond your music.

If Your Fan’s Love Language Is Words of Affirmation…

  • Compliment/Engage with your fans on social media beyond thanking them for their comments on your photos.

  • Send recorded voice memos thanking new followers for entering your world.

  • Give public shoutouts to Patreon subscribers, crowdfunding donors, fans who leave online reviews…

If Your Fan’s Love Language Is Quality Time…

  • Organize virtual meet and greets.

  • Call fans on the phone.

  • Organize pre and post main event activities.

If Your Fan’s Love Language Is Acts of Service…

  • Fundraise for a cause a super-fan cares about.

  • Dedicate a song to them.

  • Pay for their drink at a pub gig.

If Your Fan’s Love Language Is Physical Touch…

  • Hug fans at meet and greets.

  • Take selfies together.

  • Host lots of small, exclusive, intimate events.

What do you do to make your fans feel special? Do you know your love language?
